A BIMA map is presented of the (12)CO J=1-0 emission in the central 2' of the nearby (d ~ 10 Mpc) face-on Sc galaxy NGC 628. This is one of very few normal spiral galaxies observed with high spatial resolution in the CO line. The angular resolution of 7" x 12" corresponds to a linear resolution of the order of 300 x 500 pc, which is comparable to the width of the inner spiral arms. A comparison with single-dish CO observations of the central region reveals that about 45% of the single-dish flux is recovered. The CO appears to be associated with the spiral arms. While most of the CO features have an optical counterpart, there is no straightforward association with either dust or star-forming regions, suggesting that local conditions are the most important parameter in determining the amount of observable CO emission. We show that (as in M 51) this galaxy has no bright CO concentration at the very center. As this result contradicts the trend toward central concentrations found with single-dish observation, it highlights the need for high spatial resolution observations to study star formation in external galaxies
