In the height range between 105 and 115 km sporadic E formation is due exclusively to the zonal (E-W) neutral winds and both theory and experiment indicate sporadic E will occur very close to a reversal point of this zonal wind. By studying the observed heights of sporadic E-layers from a global distribution of stations we can deduce some of the regular properties of the zonal winds at 110 km. The semidiurnal zonal wind pattern is shown to be well defined, is principally the 2,2 mode, and agrees well with theoretical predictions. The diurnal zonal wind pattern is less clearly defined and does not closely resemble any theoretical mode. Steady components agree with those found by other methods.
