PSR 1133 + 16 was observed at 1.72 GHz with the 100m telescope at Effelsberg. Ultrashort intensity variations with time scales occasionally as short as 2.5 microseconds and flux densities of 300-500 Jy were detected. A statistical test is described which was done to determine the significance of short time scale fluctuations. The 100 ns time resolution was achieved by applying a dispersion removal filter before detection, but no significant unresolved pulses were discovered. Because of energy density arguments, a large corotational Lorentz factor greater than 20 would have to be adopted in order to interpret the observed microsecond duration emission as a result of relativistic beaming at the velocity of the light cylinder. The value would likely be too large, however, to ensure corotation of the magnetosphere with the pulsar.
