Modern surveys such as the SDSS enable large-scale, multiwavelength studies of stars, galaxies, and AGN. Upcoming surveys such as Pan-STARRS and LSST will greatly increase sample sizes while opening up the time domain for source classification and characterization. Traditional analysis methods (such as visual inspection) will not scale to such large, complex data sets. As a result, simulations will be a fundamental component of such studies. We are developing a realistic simulation of the LSST sky that can be used for a variety of scientific purposes, including modeling large source populations, determining the sensitivity and biases of observatories for specific scientific studies, and evaluating the effectiveness of new source-classification strategies.
