This talk will consist of two elementary mini-talks. The first mini-talk (about 10 minutes) will begin with Cornish, Spergel and Starkman's idea for finding matching circles in the CMB data, and go on to show how the matching circles determine the exact topology of space. The second mini-talk (about 20 minutes) will explain the structure of the set of all closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. More precisely, it will provide the geometrical insight into why closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds are grouped into infinite families, and how the members of each family approach a limiting cusped manifold. Both mini-talks are intended for a broad audience of cosmologists and mathematicians. No specialized knowledge of hyperbolic 3-manifolds is assumed, and pictures will be plentiful.
