Near-infrared photometry, polarimetry, and spectroscopy have been carried out on the variable emission-line object SS 433. Analysis of the observed rest and shifted infrared spectral lines suggests that the electron densities are constrained to 10 to the 8th to 3 x 10 to the 11th per cu cm and the radii of the emitting regions to 3 x 10 to the 12th to 5 x 10 to the 14th cm. Comparison with the Brackett series of hydrogen indicates that the steep Balmer decrement is due to extinction with 7 mag. The source is less than 0.3% (2 sigma) polarized at 2.2 microns.
