A visible spectrum of the 0309 + 411 radio source located on the periphery of the Perseus cluster was obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph attached to the William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma. The galaxy is found to possess hitherto unknown very large scale radio emissions and a quasarlike optical spectrum. Its angular extent of 9.5 arcmin translates to a linear size of 1.8 Mpc, the largest projected size known to date for a quasar. The properties of 0.309 + 411 are discussed within the framework of the 'unified scheme' of compact and extended extragalactic radio sources.
