Dr. Cotar has proven herself to be very adept at finding simple and elegant solutions to hard problems which experts in the field have tried with limited progress. This is exemplified by her work in three different areas: 1. the work with Vlada Limic on reinforced random walks; 2. the work with Deuschel et al on gradient models with non-convex interaction; 3. the work with Frisceke et al on optimal transport theory applied to Density Functional Theory. The last work in particular has the potential to have significant impact, because Density Functional Theory has been arguably the most useful technique in doing many body quantum mechanical calculations, which are used in physics, chemistry, and engineering. Traditional DFT approximates correlated particles by independent particle densities, which are often inadequate to study strongly correlated systems. The approach developed by Cotar et al uses as a reference point of approximation, a strongly correlated system related to an optimal transport map.
