Proposed missions to Titan's surface involve searches for pre-biotic compounds hypothesized to form from processed atmospheric sediments known as Tholins. A significant gap in this hypothesis can be filled through new laboratory measurements. Experiments simulating the Titan atmosphere have consistently generated tholin compounds when the representative Titan atmospheric mixture (98% N2, 2% CH4) is activated. However, the constituents of the activated mixture have never been probed directly with a sensitive spectrometer. We are quantitatively determining trace components of a chemically activated synthetic Titan atmosphere utilizing the JPL submillimeter spectrometer. Identification of chemical, radical and ionic species involved in the tholin production will elucidate specific production mechanisms. Subsequent observation of these trace species in Titan's atmosphere will form a basis for pre-biotic surface chemistry and mitigate risk in mission planning.
