The occurrence and general characteristics of terrestrial impact structures in Canada are discussed. The general classification and geological and geophysical characteristics of such structures are outlined, and nine of the 21 confirmed impact sites are described along with nine probable meteorite craters. Shock metamorphic effects in rocks at the sites are the principal evidence used in confirming impact origin. Calculations are made on the basis of the size and frequency distribution of Canadian impact structures, and the results indicate a terrestrial cratering rate equivalent to that of the post-mare surface of the moon.
