We present the results of XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of two FRI radio galaxies, NGC 4261 and NGC 6251, harboring supermassive black holes of known mass and nuclear LINERs. The combination of the unprecedented Chandra spatial resolution, crucial to disentangle the different X-ray emission components in the central region, and the superior Newton-XMM sensitivity, fundamental for a thorough temporal and spectral analysis, represent powerful tools by which we can understand the central engine. Specifically, we investigate the origin of the X-ray emission from the nuclear regions of these two FRI radio galaxies and the nature of the accretion process. Financial support from NASA LTSA grants NAG5-10708 (MG, RMS), NAG5-8107 (WNB), and NAG5-9982 (ME) is gratefully acknowledged.
