Nuclear reactions on the surface of the sun and the generation of solar cosmic rays are examined. Experimental data are discussed in regard to the formation of solar neutrons and gamma quanta, isotopes of hydrogen and helium in corpuscular streams of flare origin, the energetics of optical radiation during solar flares, and the role of He-3 in the generation of solar gamma quanta. It is shown that either solar cosmic rays basically fly from the sun or energetic particles detected in space are not generated primarily on the sun, but rather in interplanetary space.
