The spectrograph was designed by the instrumentation group of the European Southern Observatory and built by the REOSC corporation in Paris. It is a closed Coude spectrograph, mainly cylindrical for maximum rigidity, and consists of an entrance slit, collimator (spherical mirror with a focal length of 6 m), three gratings and three cameras, only one of which being usable at one time. These components are described in detail. Numerical data and tables for spectrograph calibration and operation are given.
