More than two decades after Pioneer Venus, systematic observations of the Venus atmosphere of Venus are once again being made by Venus Express. The intervening period has allowed for some re-examination of older observations and some reflection on the role of eddies and thermal tides in the maintenance of the superrotation. With cloud motion observations available on the night side and at high latitudes from orbit for the first time, it is hoped that we will have more insight into the superrotation of Venus.
