The Spectrometer on INTEGRAL (SPI) is a high-resolution imaging spectrometer which operates in the energy range 20 - 8000 keV. Prior to its launch October 17, 2002, SPI went through an extensive calibration campaign at the CEA/DAM site in Bruyères-le-Châtel, France. Here we discuss our effort to produce high-fidelity Monte Carlo simulations of the Bruyères-le-Châtel calibration runs and our use of these results to create the SPI instrument response. All of our simulations, including those for the instrument response, were performed using our GEANT-based MGEANT simulation software package. Comparison of the calibration data with our simulation results led to improvements in the simulation software as well as to the SPI mass model. These changes were subsequently included in our instrument response simulations. The high spectral resolution and moderate spatial resolution of SPI presents challenges to generating the instrument response. We discuss in detail our method for calculating the instrument response which combines both ray tracing and Monte Carlo techniques.
