Scientific paper
The current status of nuclear-structure measurements on medium-heavy isotopes relevant to r-process nucleosynthesis is briefly reviewed. Here, the main focus is put on the region around the doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn, where first experimental evidence for a weakening of the N=82 shell strength is presented. This new phenomenon leads to improved predictions of astrophysical observables like the solar-system isotopic r-abundances and the recent Ba-U elemental abundances of ultra-metal-poor neutron-capture-rich halo stars.
