The amplitude dependence of the behavior of a periodic density wave is analyzed in the case of a weakly rotating stellar model with constant phase density. It is found that a nonlinear wave of sufficiently small amplitude will be unstable to self-interaction if it is unstable in the linear approximation. However, the wave will be stable when stronger perturbations occur; in this case, the wave will decay into a sequence of packets which will collapse separately. It is shown that this process, together with the theory of density waves, may explain the formation of stellar clouds since the characteristic formation time of the latter is inversely proportional to the amplitude of density waves.
