Radio waves from the Andromeda Galaxy (M31, Hubble class Sc) and the Triangulum Galaxy (M33, Hubble class Sb) are analyzed and the data compared, using the radio telescope of the Max Planck Institute. The total intensity and the linearly polarized component of the radiation of M31 were measured in 1977-78, and new maps established. M31 emits radio waves primarily from the nucleus and a ring-like structure of spiral-arm segments, some 35,000 light-years from the center. Most emissions are nonthermal, indicating the existence of a magnetic field and cosmic-ray electrons. M33 has about 10 times less mass and optical luminosity than M31, and is lacking prominent spiral arms, a ring and a nucleus, however, a bright disk was discovered. The most intense source of radio emission in M33 was found in the giant H II region NGC 604, northeast of the galaxy's center. More than 50 percent of the magnetic field lines were found to be chaotic, while alignment predominated in the magnetic field of M31. Radio emission from a galactic nucleus apparently does not incite radio emission from the disk of the system, and it is suggested that the nucleus has a life of its own.
