The evolution of large stellar systems is discussed in terms of evaporation of stars from the system, dissipative cooling of the system through tidal interaction among member stars, and heating of the system by hardening of the tight binaries which have formed. Globular clusters and galaxy nuclei whose initial stellar velocity dispersion is greater than 150 km/s, should arrive at an evolutionary regime in which the velocity dispersion remains nearly constant at about 30 km/s. In galaxy nuclei with initial velocity dispersion of not less than 150 km/s, the dissipative cooling will speed the contraction process so that a finite number of members will remain in the system.
