We present low resolution optical spectra of 16 field stars in the CaII H and K lines towards the high velocity cloud (HVC) at V=+80 kms-1, observed in the direction of the M15 globular cluster. Stellar spectral types and distances are estimated for 12 of the sample. Null detections of HVC CaII absorption in the spectra, combined with an upper limit to the HVC distance from observations of the Galactic halo star HD 203664, tentatively imply that the HVC lies in the distance range 400 <= d <= 3200 pc.
