New photometry of the optical counterpart of GX304-1 reveals large differences from the photometry reported by Mason, Murdin, Parkes and Visvanathan (1978), both for the counterpart and for neighbouring stars. Thus no conclusions can be drawn about possible variability of the object from the observations presented here. Its distance and luminosity are briefly discussed.
