We have obtained high resolution Hβ spectra of HD 77581 showing an absorption line with extended emission wings. We have analysed the shape of the as a function of the phase of the 283-s period pulsations of the associated X-ray source 4U 0900-40 (Vela XR-1). No significant phase-dependent variability was detected to an amplitude limit ˜1 per cent in any spectral resolution element of 3 Å width. This limit lies below the amplitude of a previously reported Hβ periodicity.
