Implications of the shape of Mimas as revealed by Voyager images for the density distribution of the satellite are discussed. Despite evidence of heavy impact cratering, the Voyager images of the satellite's leading hemisphere indicate a flattening of the triaxial ellipsoid of not more than a few percent. Such a low degree of flattening of a Roche ellipsoid would imply either a density greater than 2 g/cu cm in the Roche model, which is incompatible with an icy composition, or an inhomogeneous interior composed of a denser rocky core and an icy mantle.
