The chemical processes that occur in the gas-phase and on the surfaces of dust particles in regions of dense interstellar clouds known as cold cores are discussed. These regions represent the first stage in the formation of low-mass stars such as our sun. Although the chemical processes that occur in cold cores appear to be reasonably well understood, detailed gas-phase models of the chemistry do not reproduce 100% of the observed molecular abundances, possibly because our knowledge of gas-grain interactions and the dynamics of the physical conditions is insufficient. The chemistry of stages in star formation following cold cores is discussed briefly.
