The processes involved in tektite formation are examined as the source of the common composition and atomic and molecular structure of all known tektites independent of their place of origin and geological age. A detailed analysis of the chemical composition and atomic and molecular structures of irgizites from the Zhamanshin crater and other tektites supports the hypothesis that the tektites formed as the result of giant meteorite impacts which caused the melting and selective vaporization of the target material. The structure and composition of the tektites is then accounted for by subsequent aerosol accretion, selective condensation and the formation of silicate melts which took on a drop shape as they fell through the atmosphere. Of the various melt compositions that formed, only the high-silica low-alkaline glasses were able to survive subsequent rapid cooling and preserve the structure of the superhigh-temperature melt.
