Medium-band imaging with HST/WFPC2 in the F410M filter has previously revealed a population of faint compact Lyman-Alpha emitters at z eq 2.4 around the radio galaxy 53W002 and in three random parallel F410M fields {Pascarelle Etal 1996, 1998}. We propose to analyze a dozen Cycle 7+8 WFPC2 fields in F410M and F467M to do a systematic search for compact Ly- alpha emitting objects at z 2.3-2.9. Several new deep observations in F410M and F467M are in the Archive, and several more cge 5-8 orbit parallels are planned in these filters for Cycles 7+8. With this data set, we will address the following science goals: bullet {1} Find 100 faint compact Ly-alpha emitting objects {in groups or filaments} at z=2.37+/-0.06 {F410M} & z=2.85+/-0.07 {F467M}, and confirm their redshifts with the 6.5m MMT. bullet {2} Determine the luminosity function of the compact emission line objects and constrain the luminous mass spectrum at z eq2.3-2.9. bullet {3} Determine the size distribution of these compact emission line objects and compare them to the sizes of galaxies seen today; bullet {4} Determine whether or not the variations in number counts from field to field of the compact Ly-alpha emitters found in previous observations are statistically significant; bullet {5} Determine their galaxy types, Ly- alpha fluxes, AGN fractions, and constrain their SFR.
