The Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) is a versatile, fiber-fed, dual beam echelle spectrograph for optical and near-IR observations with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. Its high efficiency, excellent velocity stability, broad wavelength coverage, wide range of resolving power (3500 < R < 20,000), and many observing modes (including synthetic long-slit, multi-object, and integral field) make the instrument ideal for a wide range of scientific investigations. We review some of the major programs the MRS will undertake during its first few years of service, paying particular attention to those projects that will exercise the unique capabilities of the instrument and the telescope.
