Scientific paper

The SIRTF Project Scientist will describe the scientific capabilities of SIRTF, the infrared component of NASA's Great Observatories program. The first opportunity to propose scientific observing programs with SIRTF will occur in 2000, with launch scheduled for 2001. The expected performance of SIRTF and its three science instruments will be presented. The seven observing modes, through which users will interact with the spacecraft, will be described. There will also be quantitative information presented on the sky visibility function, the sensitivity and confusion limits, the pointing performance of the Observatory, and other important parameters affecting proposal planning.
