UV and optical spectra of hot pre-white dwarfs and white dwarfs, often in planetary nebulae, show emission from ios charactrizing tempeartures far above that of the photosphere. This includes emission from O VII and O VIII, as well as other species. The unusually high ionization emission features suggest a chromosheric-like region around these objects. We will use the spectral and imaging capabilities of STIS to observe these objects with the goals of a.} determining what high ionization features are present, b.}map the extended nebular emission, and c.} derive ionization structure at larger distances.
