In the past two years, observations of Eta Carina have revealed much new and very exciting information. Augusto Damineli noted a 5.5 year period in the visible and near infrared spectroscopy. Michael Corcoran and Bish Ishibashi noticed modulation of the x-ray fluxes with periods of 82, 41 and now 95 days before and after the xray and radio minimum in the December 1997 through March 1998 timeframe. Observations under proposal 7302 {Davidson et al} revealed much new information in the immediate regions of Eta Carina from 1640A to 10400A using STIS in GXXXM mode and the 50x0.1 arcsecond slit. Spectroscopic identifications by Sveneric Johnanson and Torgil Zethson showed much FeII emission lines, from broad line star and the sharp line nebula within two arc seconds radius of Eta Carina. Based upon the past ground-based history of Eta Carina, we expect that FeIII and other high ionization states will return within the year. These STIS GTO observations are in pursuit of characteriz in g the bright internal ionized nebula by turning the slit 90 degrees for visit 1 and studying the changes in spectrum as the FeIII lines appear by using visit 2 with the identical slit orientation from March 19, 1998 {proposal 7302}. Results from visit 1 {and Cycle 7 observations} demonstrate a long linear feature extending out of the disk region at PA 27 deg. As this is not on the axis of symmetry for the Homunculus, SW04, SW08 are added to map how far this feature extends from Eta Carina and whether it is associable with the Homunculus axis of symmetry. Halpha settings {6678A} are being utilized to track this structure in the last half of orbit 4.
