The maximum value of the spin-up of an accreting star is determined. A
comparison with observations shows that X-ray pulsars are neutron stars
but not white dwarfs. The observed rates of spin-down of X-ray pulsars
are found to correlate with their luminosities and periods. This is
evidence that X-ray pulsars are in an equilibrium state.
