Goldreich and Kwan (1974) suggested that collisional pumping of cosmic H2O masers with energy sinks cannot assure a sink rate that is necessary for powerful sources. This paper presents a simple proof for the Goldreich-Kwan theorem for effectively thick media, and generalizes this theorem to several geometries not considered before. Conditions under which collisional pumping can assure the necessary sink rate are described.
