The study of the variable GD 385 should be useful for understanding the mechanism at work in the variable white dwarfs. GD 385 behaves for long periods of time (months) like a typical, low-amplitude variable white dwarf. Suddenly, on a time scale of the order of days, the behavior of the variations may change. The light curve exhibits many significant frequencies or none at all. GD 385 evolved over two days from a state of low photometric activity (1979 June 25) to one of complex activity (1979 June 27). A description is presented of photometric observations of GD 385 which provide additional information on the sequence of events which occurred in 1979 June.
