It is believed that a small solid grain in space has an electrostatic potential on its surface. The reported study has the objective to reexamine the physical processes governing the electrostatic potential of a grain in interplanetary space. The electrostatic potential of a grain is estimated as a function of grain radius and solar distance. Attention is given to collisions of charged particles, photoelectron emission under solar irradiation, and the electric potential of an interplanetary grain. It is found that several secondary electrons are emitted when an electron with an energy of about 130 eV impinges on a graphite or a silicate grain. This implies that for both materials the incidence of a high-energy electron causes a decrease of negative charge on the grain surface until the grain attains enough positive potential to prevent this emission of secondary electrons.
