Several scientists combine science-fiction writing with their scientific work. Both Gregory Benford and Geoffrey Landis grew up reading science fiction before becoming scientists. Other authors/scientists are William K. Hartmann and Alastair Reynolds. Joe Haldeman and David Brin, two of science fiction's most famous names, moved away from science early in their careers. Haldeman sees science as a necessary and enjoyable part of his writing life.
