Most of our knowledge of the Universe has been obtained from observations of photons emitted by celestial bodies. Observations in new spectral windows continue to provide new views of the Universe. Thus photon detection technology plays an essential role in astronomy. In this article, the authors briefly introduce their work on photodetector research and development at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. This work includes the development of hard-X-ray imaging devices, microcalorimeters for soft X-rays and submillimeter detectors.
