The Fifth Fundamental Catalog is described in terms of its reference system and history, and the improvements made in it over the previous catalog are described, emphasizing the improvement in the null point and new determinations of precession constants. The significance of the new catalog for studying the earth's rotation, the Galactic rotation, the mass of the Galaxy, and the cosmic distance scale is discussed.
