The effect of shear along light rays on the distance-redshift relation in an inhomogeneous universe is investigated on the basis of relativistic optical equations. With some reasonable assumptions, an analytic formula for the shear in a simplified cosmological model is derived. The derived formula is compared with numerical calculations, and the validity and limitation of the formula are discussed. Then, the role of shear in the distance-redshift relation is discussed in detail.
