Performance of the inertial reference unit (IRU) in the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO-C) is documented. The OAO and IRU are briefly described along with the data reduction programs used to calibrate the IRU in orbit. Application of gyros with good long-term drift stability to future spacecraft such as the Large Space Telescope and Earth Observatory Satellite is discussed.
