A comparison is made of the altitude profiles of the electron concentration in the outer ionosphere constructred using data of the Interkosmos-19 and Kosmos-1809 satellites with the IRI-86 and SMI-85 models. Variations of the differences between the experimental data and the models for the summer are discussed as a function of the time of day, altitude, latitude, and solar activity. It is concluded that these models are in need of significant further improvement for an adequate description of the distribution of the electron concentration in the top-side ionosphere.
