Short-term, of the order of a half-month in duration, variations of the flux of galactic cosmic rays at the Earth are related, with a correlation coefficient of 0.89, to the energies of the longitudinal-radial and latitudinal components of the Sun's magnetic field in the corona and to the accumulation of magnetic energy of the latitudinal component in interplanetary space. The higher the energy of the longitudinal-radial component of the Sun's magnetic field, the smaller is the depth of modulation of the cosmic-ray flux. The higher the value of the energy of the latitudinal component, the deeper is the modulation. This is the dominating factor in the magnitude of its contribution to the modulation. The result is obtained from data for the period 1976 - 1985; the energy of the Sun's magnetic field was calculated in the potential approximation within the framework of a model with a zero-potential surface located at a distance of 2.5 solar radii. Long-term, half-year to a year in duration, variations of the flux of galactic cosmic rays are more closely related, with a correlation coefficient of 0.96, to an energy parameter of the interplanetary medium. The energy parameter is calculated as the geometric mean of the energy of the Sun's quadrupole magnetic field and the geometric mean value of the energies of the dipole and octupole magnetic fields of the Sun, with accumulation of this parameter and its dissipation with the passage of time.
