The feasibility of measuring the main parameters of a 3 m class satellite borne inflatable antenna at 10 GHz by regarding the Sun or the Moon as a test transmitter is investigated. Provided the measurements are made during a relatively quiet period of solar activity, good data can be obtained for beam width, gain, and near sidelobe levels. The pointing accuracy of the antenna must be about 4 arc minutes over the scanning range of the order of 10 degrees. The receiver can be a simple transistor amplifier with a calibrated noise injection in the input line in order to measure the absolute antenna temperature. The main conclusions of the study are applicable to antennas whose diameter varies from 3 to 5 m. Appendices are given which describe: measurement of the absolute radio spectrum of the source and the use of the spectrum for calibration of larger antennas; the measurement of large antennas with cosmic radio sources; radio holographic reflector measurement of the 30 millimeter radio telescope at 22 GHz with a cosmic signal source; and phase retrieval radio holography in the Fresnel region.
