Starting from ideal magnetohydrodynamics, the linear stability of a semicircular electric-current sheet fixed on the photosphere is analyzed. The main conclusion is that, when the magnetic field in the direction of the current is less than a certain critical value, the sheet is unstable, and the wavenumber of the first unstable mode in the direction of the current is approximately the reciprocal of the diameter of the semicircle.
