The interaction of atomic magnetic moments with nonuniform magnetic fields may be important for the motion of matter near the surface of neutron and magnetic stars. A model of formation of anomalous gradients of abundance of some elements in magnetic stars is considered which is an extension of the old Babcock (1963) and Jensen (1962) model and more or less overcome its difficulties. The dependence of the susceptibility of different atoms on the strength of the magnetic field is discussed qualitatively. Occurrence of analog of the phase transition of the second-order from diamagnetic to paramagnetic state is shown to be held in helium with increasing of the magnetic field.
