The detection of 206s X-ray pulsations from H 0253 + 193 indicates that the source is a compact object. It is argued here that the object can not be a T Tauri star or a Be/X-ray binary pulsar embedded in the molecular cloud L 1457. It is suggested that H 0253+193 is a slowly rotating single neutron star now accreting interstellar matter after having been spun down by a propeller type mechanism during its passage through the cloud.
