Knowledge gained on the nature of active galactic nuclei and other
exotic objects by the use of radio interferometry is briefly reviewed.
The historical development of VLBI networks which made this knowledge
possible is summarized. The impact of radio interferometry on other
astronomical fields is briefly considered.
