The basic concepts behind the design of echelle spectrographs being built for the Anglo-Australian Telescope, and proposed for the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope of the LPO, are described. The astronomical requirements are outlined, followed by consideration of the constraints imposed by the detector. Attention is drawn to the importance of the echelle blaze profile, and results of the calculations are presented. The effects of the minimum SNR and its uniformity in the resulting data are stressed, and the implications on optical design described. Some consequences of different cross disperser designs are also considered.
