Some examples of the determination of spatial scale in a moving plasma are described with reference to probe studies of plasmas in the earth's magnetosphere, interplanetary space, and planetary atmospheres (especially those of Jupiter and Saturn). It is noted that the measurement of the three-dimensional distribution function of energetic ions makes it possible to determine the distance from the satellite to the boundary of the particle-capture zone (near the magnetopause) and to study the motion of this boundary. Another technique for determining the spatial scale is to use variations of the distribution function of hot ions to determine the distance from the boundary of the magnetosphere and to reconstruct the electric potential profile in a double Chapman layer.
