The distribution, crystal chemistry, and mineralogy of Ge is reviewed. The presence of Ge in chondritic meteorites, stony-iron meteorites, and various terrestrial materials, including the crust of the earth, ocean water, and rocks, is described. The valency, which generally occurs in the quadrivalent state, and the bonding of Ge are examined. The occurrence of Ge in various minerals, such as silicates, sulfides, hydroxides, and sulfates, is studied. An analysis of the aqueous and organic chemistry of Ge is presented. The behavior of Ge in metals is investigated, and the derivation of Ge in hydrothermal fluids from enrichment during the fractional crystallization of igneous fluids or due to the incorporation of Ge from the country rocks is studied.
