The role of ozone heating in amplifying or damping planetary waves is studied within the framework of a two-dimensional atmospheric model. Estimates of the column ozone transfer and ozone heat influx were derived from height-averaged hydrothermodynamics equations. The conditions leading to the formation of planetary wave instabilities are discussed in detail. Latitudinal profiles describing the evolution of planetary waves over a twelve-month period are constructed on the basis of the numerical results.
